Port wine (also known as Vinho do Porto, Porto, and often simply port) is a Portuguese fortified wine produced exclusively in the Douro Valley in the northern provinces of Portugal. It is typically a sweet red wine, often served as a dessert wine though it also comes in dry, semi-dry, and white varieties. Under European Union Protected Designation of Origin guidelines, only the product from Portugal may be labelled as port or Porto. In the United States, wines labelled "port" may come from anywhere in the world, while the names "Dão," "Oporto," "Porto," and "Vinho do Porto" have been recognized as foreign, non-generic names for wines originating in Portugal.

Kopke is the first Port house established in the Douro region of Portugal. They have been producing and shipping Port wine since before it had been officially named. Amazingly, the company has had only four owners in nearly 400 years. Some old traditions still linger, for example, the "labels" on the bottle are still painted on by hand.

During the class, you’ll learn the difference between Ruby and Tawny ports while tasting a variety of Kopke Ports matched with food pairings that help highlight the different characteristics of the Ports. There will also be some special treats, including a 2007 Vintage Ruby, an aged Colheita, and a 40+ year Tawny.

Join us as we taste several of the Ports from this venerable house with a long history of excellent offerings.
